Mistress and Maid Dinah Maria Mulock Craik 9781146299336 Books Reviews
Honestly, I would rate three and a half stars if it were an option. I felt it moved rather slow in the first one third or so of the book. It wasn't until the sisters moved to London and thus different characters where introduced and enlivened the story. Dinah did a fantastic job allowing me to know and feel close to both the protagonist Hilary as well as the maid Elizabeth.
Like all of the books I have read by this author it is well written, has believable characters, keeps you interested and I would recommend it highly.
I adore historical fiction. This is a slice of life type historical fiction which covers a portion of a woman's life and how she survived some difficult things. It was very interesting.
Being particularly fond of the early 1800's genre, this story reminds us how difficult poverty and the class system in England was. It is a moral story of good finally prevails.
I personally do not find life tied up finally in a pretty bow but enjoyed the reminder of how far we have come.
Takes a while tp get into but eventually it catches hour mind. Writimg qnd thought process are definitely early 1900s.
This is an interesting tale of the life of an English maid, Elizabeth Hand, from entering service in her teens into old age. It relates how her life progresses in relationship to that of her three mistresses. Her service was probably not typical of maids of the time but it makes one wish that it were.
There is something about a book written so long ago...so different than what is written today. The poverty of the sisters, the spoiled nephew all striving to be "ladies/gentlemen". A perfect book to curl up on a rainy day, with a cup of tea. The character of Elizabeth is really the heroine, I believe. This book is more her story, yet written less.
I really enjoyed this book. It takes place long ago, but the ideas in it are timeless. Our modern society puts men and women on equal footing, but this book tells us that there are some areas in which men and women have differing talents, in general. But women can be business people, which was rare at the time this takes place. I loved the characters in this story, and admired their perseverance. I was a little leery of the title, wondering if it was going to be a lurid story. It isn't.
